Buying Gold
GOLD: THE MOST CHERISHED METAL
Gold has dazzled the human eye from the beginning of history. A rare metal that can be manipulated into any shape or design that fancies the imagination. The most popular color of gold is yellow, however it is becoming increasingly fashionable to produce gold jewellery that is either white, or two tone.
WHAT DOES KARAT MEAN?
Karat refers to the actual percentage of pure gold in jewellery. 100% pure gold is called 24karat. But pure gold is too soft to be used as jewellery. Therefore, gold is often mixed with other metals to ensure the long life of the jewellery. Gold jewellery will come in 18karat, 14karat, to 10karat. The lower the number the less amount of gold in the piece. Canadian standards prevent anything less than 10karat from being sold as gold jewellery.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
Another factor determining the value of gold, is the artistry of the jewellery's craftsman. Some pieces are more difficult to design, and some jewelers have better reputations than others. Therefore, it is always important to look for the craftsman's trademark on gold jewellery before making a purchase.
